District Welcome

  • Spring 2019

Dr. Jan Rashid, Superintendent As hard as it is to believe, Spring Break signals that the end of the school year is approaching quickly. Along with warmer weather (hopefully!), April and May bring many exciting events such as the boys volleyball and girls soccer seasons, Band and Choir Concerts, awards assemblies, the Talent Show, Fine Arts Celebration, 8th grade celebrations and our graduation ceremonies. And, we are excited to introduce the new Spring Running Club for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, sponsored by the River Grove Lions Club. Students will run one day per week during their lunch recess, developing a strong work ethic and appreciation for lifelong fitness.

The RG Royals have been quite successful in their accomplishments this school year.

    • At the IGSMA Solo/Ensemble at Central Middle School in Evergreen Park on Saturday, February 23, 51 Junior High band and choir members participated in 53 separate performances, earning six Division II rankings and 47 Division I rankings.
    • The Concert Band earned a Division I Rating in the Competition held on March 16.
    • In November, eighth grade students participated in the Youth Government activity through the Village of River Grove, being elected to leadership roles and learning about serving their community.
    • RGS students made Valentine’s Day Cards for Veterans to celebrate their service to our country and to let them know they are appreciated.
    • Students and families of River Grove donated money and supplies for Fisher House, the home at the Hines Veterans Hospital which provides a place for families of injured veterans to stay, so that they can be close to their loved one.
    • Junior High students continue to develop their journalism skills by writing, illustrating and publishing the Royal Revolution. This newspaper is mailed to all households in River Grove twice each year. Look for the Spring Edition coming in May.

A special congratulations goes out to the RG Royals 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team. This team went undefeated over the past 2 seasons and won the Division and Conference Tournament in 2018 and 2019. That is quite an accomplishment and says much about their
passion, persistence, hard work, teamwork and sportsmanship. They make us proud!

Finally, in the spring of 2017 the Board of Education initiated the Strategic Planning process to develop a continuous growth model for the school and district, in order to provide the best possible opportunities for the students of River Grove School. The administrators, teachers and staff continue to work together to take the goals of that five year Strategic Plan and create the action steps and timeline to meet the goals. In May, the full Strategic Planning Committee, including staff, parents and community members will come together to review the plan and provide input on the next steps. I look forward to sharing the great things happening at River Grove School with the committee.

As a reminder, due to the 4 inclement weather days, the last day of school will be a half day on Thursday, May 30. Graduation dates for 8th Grade and Kindergarten students have not changed.
I look forward to seeing you at some of the wonderful spring events at RGS!

    All my best,
    Dr. Rashid
